Pumpkins are a classic Halloween decoration, and the tradition of carving pumpkins has roots in early American celebrations of the fall harvest when the orange gourds were used to decorate long banquet tables. Advanced pumpkin carvers go beyond the geometric facial patterns of novice pumpkin design and explore the world of more complicated shapes and images. Motorcycles are a challenging and detailed design theme for pumpkins that are well suited for a grown-up Halloween party.

1. Motorcycle Designs

Motorcycle designs require patience and a bit of artistic skill. A standard profile offers the best view for a carved motorcycle design. A freehand drawing allows you to create an image suited for your particular pumpkin and your own design aesthetic. A photograph of a motorcycle or a stencil can serve as a guide prior to carving. Chopper bikes with an extended front frame and reclined seat offer dramatic lines and simple shapes for a pumpkin carving. Exhaust flames or a skeleton cyclist can add a fun Halloween touch.

2. Motorcycle Logos

If a motorcycle design is slightly outside of your skill set, consider a motorcycle logo as a more beginner-friendly design for your pumpkin. Harley Davidson logos, with their classic shield and simple lettering, are among the most recognizable, but Ducati, Honda and Victory also have logos that are clear and closely associated with motorcycle culture. Another option is to carve the logo of a custom motorcycle company. West Coast Choppers, East Coast Choppers and Orange County Choppers are just a few of the custom bike companies with distinctive logos suitable for pumpkin carving.

3. Carving Tips and Tricks

Choosing the right kind of pumpkin is the first step in ensuring the success of your motorcycle carving project. Motorcycle designs need to be large to accommodate the amount of detail necessary to render a realistic design. Large pumpkins with a flat carving side are the best options for detailed work. A sketch of your design on the pumpkin before you begin carving helps guide your work. To create depth and manage minute details (like wheel spokes or handle bar grips) use scraping methods that remove single layers of pumpkin rather than large chunks of pumpkin flesh.

How to Create Unusual Pumpkin Carving Designs

pumpkin carving ideas| pumpkin carving ideas for kids| pumpkin carving ideas pinterest| pumpkin carving ideas for couples| pumpkin carving ideas easy| pumpkin carving ideas tumblr| pumpkin carving ideas for toddlers| pumpkin carving ideas for girls

After carving your fifteenth smiley-faced pumpkin, it's easy to get bored. It only takes a little imagination and ingenuity to come up with a new and unusual pumpkin carving design. If you're artistically inclined, you can design it yourself with nothing but a pencil and piece of paper. If you're not, there are many free pumpkin carving patterns available on the Internet. It's a good idea to get some tools that are specifically made for carving pumpkins.

Instructions

1. Draw your original and unusual design on a piece of paper. Measure the pumpkin in advance to make sure that your design is the right size. Some interesting ideas include a witch, a witch's cat, acorns, fall leaves, spiders and bats.

2. Navigate to a website that offers pumpkin carving patterns for free if you won't be drawing your own. Search using terms like "unusual pumpkin patterns," "free pumpkin carving templates" or "unique pumpkin stencils." Then import the image into your favorite image processing program and resize it so that it prints out the right size.

3. Carve out a hole at the top of the pumpkin. Spoon out the seeds and pulp from the inside. Wash and dry the seeds immediately if you'd like to roast them later.

4. Attach the pattern to the pumpkin with tape. Take care to secure it firmly so that it doesn't slip while you're transferring your pumpkin carving design.

5. Use a needle to poke tiny holes wherever you see dark lines in your carving pattern. After the entire shape has been outlined, remove the paper from the pumpkin.

6. Use a small saw tool to carve out the pumpkin design. Work very slowly and carefully on intricate and tiny patterns such as spider legs and webs, veins of leaves and cat whiskers. Consider carving a shallow relief rather than removing entire slices of pumpkin. If you're using this technique, you don't have to scoop out the interior of the pumpkin. Spray your pumpkin daily with a pumpkin preservative to keep it fresh.

7. Light your pumpkin and admire your handiwork. Be sure to display the unusual pumpkin where it can be seen for Halloween. Tips & Warnings

- Draw only one half of your pattern on a piece of paper. Scan it, then use your favorite image processing software to mirror the half, creating a perfectly symmetrical design.
- Use Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro to edit your pumpkin carving pattern before transferring it to the pumpkin. If you need a free image processing program, use GIMP.

Scary Pumpkin Carving Ideas

pumpkin carving ideas| pumpkin carving ideas for kids| pumpkin carving ideas pinterest| pumpkin carving ideas for couples| pumpkin carving ideas easy| pumpkin carving ideas tumblr| pumpkin carving ideas for toddlers| pumpkin carving ideas for girls

Pumpkin carving is a traditional Halloween activity in which fall harvest meets creepy holiday. Creating a jack-o'-lantern that is truly scary takes a little thought since the traditional triangle eyes and smiling mouth aren't going to achieve the desired effect. Fortunately, making a smile look scary isn't difficult, and a simple face can turn dark with a tilt of the carving knife. When in doubt, sharply pointed eyebrows go a long way towards making a friendly face look maniacal.

1. Zombie Pumpkin

The zombie pumpkin has risen from the dead to frighten trick or treaters. Give your zombie pumpkin X's for eyes, a long jagged scar and an uneven mouth hungry for brains. Use a wood carving tool to cut some long strips from inside the pumpkin, and hang them by pushing the ends into small holes cut in the face. These are the worms eating the zombie pumpkin head.

2. The Fierce Mouth

No matter how skilled you are at pumpkin carving, you can always create a scary pumpkin with the right wide toothy mouth. This basic idea works well for kids since it doesn't have to require any precision cutting. Start by drawing the design on the pumpkin with a pencil, and cut along the lines. Try carving jagged, pointed teeth into a maniacal grin. Lopsided mouths also work well as do large frowns. Just stay away from the square teeth since those tend to turn out more goofy than scary.

3. Cannibal Pumpkin

The cannibal requires two pumpkins, one large and one small. Design the eyes however you please, but leave plenty of space for the mouth. The mouth needs to be large enough to fit the smaller pumpkin in its jaws. If the smaller pumpkin is large enough to carve, carve in a horrified face with a big "O" for a mouth. If it isn't large enough, draw on a face with permanent marker or paint one on with oil or acrylic paints. Secure the smaller pumpkin in the mouth of the larger one, and light the large one from the inside. You can light the small one too if it has room for a candle, or carve a hole in the back of it so the single light source can shine through both pumpkin faces.

4. Templates

If you do not feel comfortable designing your scary pumpkin face yourself, browse online for some printable carving templates or look at your local Halloween store. Invest in some high quality carving tools since many templates are intricate and require precision carving.

Unusual Pumpkin Carving Ideas

Pumpkin carving is a Halloween tradition that has its roots in the ancient Celtic holiday of Samhain. The lit pumpkins were said to welcome the spirits of dead ancestors, and ward off evil spirits. Today, carved pumpkins make great Halloween decorations, and carving them is a fun activity for kids and adults alike. The traditional grinning Jack-o'-Lantern face is an old favorite, but you can put a creative twist on your pumpkin carving.

1. Group Themes

If each member of the household carves a pumpkin, consider picking a group theme. You can carve the Three Stooges, the seven dwarves, or the three musketeers. If you want to be really creative, pick an abstract theme, like the seven deadly sins, and see how everyone interprets their choice.

2. Abstract Designs

A pumpkin doesn't have to have a face. A simple, artistic design can be an elegant option, and great for decorating adult Halloween parties. Consider carving paisley swirls, geometric squares, polka dots, or plaid. It's best to pick one pattern and continue it across multiple pumpkins to keep party décor looking coordinated and classy.

3. Unexpected Characters

While scary faces are common on Jack- o'-Lanterns, why not use an unexpected character? Comic book characters, movie stars, retro movie monsters, or children's characters are all creative choices. If you're concerned about your artistic ability, sketch out your design on the pumpkin before carving for improved accuracy.

4. Words and Phrases

Carving words onto a pumpkin is an appropriate choice for readers, minimalists, and English teachers. Use a Halloween word, like BOO or SPOOKY. Personalize your pumpkin with your name, initials, or family name. Spell out longer sentences with multiple pumpkins if desired.

Political Pumpkin Carving Ideas

Instead of going with the standard, predictable jack-o'-lantern pumpkin design, get political this Halloween with a capital carving idea. Display your political views creatively by using them as inspiration for your pumpkin carving design. For instance, use images of your favorite political figures, symbols that express your political standing or simply the name of the candidate you hope to see reign supreme at the next election, be it local or national.

1. Political Parties

Show support to your affiliated political party by dedicating your pumpkin carving to its symbols. If you consider yourself a Democrat, draw or trace the outline of a donkey onto the front of the pumpkin; you can simply cut out the entire outline, or you can etch in extra features for more detail. If you're a Republican, on the other hand, you'll want to use the elephant symbol on your pumpkin. Of course, you don't have to adhere to the traditional bipartisan go-to's. Feel free to express support for other parties, or even make a variety of political party pumpkins to coexist on your front porch.

2. Presidents

With so many past and present presidents to choose from, it may be difficult to select just one as the basis for your carving inspiration. For a more easily recognizable pumpkin design, try to stick to the most iconic American presidents; these could include George Washington, Abe Lincoln, the Bushes or Barack Obama. Either hand-draw or trace a template of your chosen president's profile. You can make your carving as realistic or caricatured as you like. If you don't feel satisfied making just one presidential pumpkin, make multiples. In fact, you could make your very own pumpkin version of Mount Rushmore right on your front porch.

3. Famous Politicians

Presidents are certainly not the end of the political pumpkin spectrum; there are a wide variety of famous politicians from around the world that could make for a great pumpkin carving design. Take inspiration from political television personalities, senators and congress members, famous mayors or even some recognizable local politicians in your area. Some examples could include Hillary Clinton or Dick Cheney. Another idea would be to branch out into political figures from around the world, using famous figures like prime ministers, Marxist leaders, dictators and any other variety of political personality you can think of. Go with iconic images for your pumpkin carvings to avoid having to explain the design to friends and neighbors over and over.

4. Election Campaigns

If there is a big election coming up, whether it's local or national, ditch the standard front lawn campaign signs and instead express your support via pumpkin. Draw or stencil in the names of the candidates you hope to see elected into office, and then carve out your design and illuminate the pumpkin to create a glowing reminder for neighborhood voters. If the names of the candidates are long, try spreading out the letters over several pumpkins. Or, you could simply encourage people to vote by carving a checked box into your pumpkin.

Cute Pumpkin Carving Ideas

Carving pumpkins is a long-standing tradition around Halloween, and the end result is often called a “jack-o-lantern.” Traditionally, the pumpkin is carved to depict an evil or frightful face or some other hallmark designed to instill fear such as a bat. However, you do not have to adhere to carving your pumpkin in a morose manner. There is no limit to what you can carve in your pumpkin, including a variety of cute subject matter. If a cute pumpkin is more to your liking, then let your imagination show no bounds.

1. Cute Take on Traditional

Instead of making a traditional “scary” jack-o-lantern face with jagged teeth and evil eyes, try using rounded eyes and blunted teeth in a smiling mouth. Even traditionally scary subject matter such as ghosts, skeletons and witches can be carved in a cute fashion. Any traditional horrific icon can be transformed into a cute and harmless version, normally indicated in the facial expressions and lack of sharp edges.

2. Cartoon Characters

Your favorite cartoon characters can be carved into your pumpkin. Whether you carve a close-up of the face or the entire body, cartoons offer an endless array of alternatives to a traditional scary jack-o-lantern. Film companies like Dreamworks Pixar have countless cartoon characters from which to choose, and comic book companies like DC, Image and Marvel provide no shortage of superheroes for carving. Carving patterns are available in stores around Halloween time and online year round for many characters.

3. People

Choosing a figure from popular culture or from history to carve into your pumpkin is another alternative to scary subject matter. People like a past or present president, a movie star or even a sports star make excellent subjects for pumpkin carving, and many are available online and in stores in the form of carving patterns. There are even companies that can turn your individual photos into carving patterns so you can carve a pumpkin with your own likeness.

4. Outside the Carving

Don't be constrained to simply carving into the pumpkin. You can use carving to create something new out of the pumpkin. Carving out a large mouth from one side can be attached to the opposite side to craft a fish with a fin. Three pumpkins of descending sizes can be stacked on top each other, held together with a metal stake and then carved to resemble a snowman. Be creative with the shape of the pumpkin and don't be afraid to experiment with changing the shape of the pumpkin.

5. Scenery

A house doesn’t have to be haunted to end up carved on a pumpkin. Try replicating your house or apartment, or try a mountainous or oceanic scene instead of a graveyard.

6. Written Message

You can also use pumpkin carving as a means to communicate as opposed to simply a picture. A “Welcome” pumpkin or the surname of your family is a cute way to greet guests, or a “Sale” pumpkin can greet customers in a storefront. Mini-pumpkins carved with individualized names are a unique way to mark place settings at a large dinner function.

Funny Pumpkin Carving Ideas

Halloween is all about fun and creativity, and one of the best ways to incorporate both into the holiday is through the carving of the jack-o- lantern. Carved gourds have increased in intricacy as people have discovered the possibilities for recreating portraits, movie characters, still life scenes and pop culture references. Creating a laugh-out-loud pumpkin does not have to be difficult, however. It is most often accomplished with a good idea, fairly simple carving and clever accessories.

1. Nerds, Socialites and More

The stereotypical characters of high school and beyond make for clever pumpkins, especially when you bring in accessories or stage a scene for display. To create a "nerd" pumpkin, carve a wide smile and use wire to add braces, then either carve or glue on large eyeglass frames. Add a propeller beanie for an old-school nerd look. A socialite pumpkin can be created with a blond wig, a toy mobile phone attached to the ear area, painted makeup and a setting that features anything from a stuffed "purse dog" to a pair of sparkly shoes placed beneath the pumpkin. Put a large socialite pumpkin in the driver's seat of a child's pink motorized jeep for extra laughs. A hipster pumpkin might feature horn-rimmed glasses, a flannel shirt and ear buds. A college boy pumpkin could be set among a pile of empty beer bottles with the pumpkin insides spilling out of the mouth -- and don't forget the university logo baseball cap.

2. Dark Humor

Scary or disturbing pumpkins can also be funny if cleverly done. The setting is what often makes the difference in this category. For example, a jack-o-lantern with a scary face is boring alone on a porch, but if it wields a knife or hatchet and is placed next to another pumpkin carved to look terrified, it becomes funny. Scary jack-o-lanterns that eat things can also be shockingly funny. Try placing baby pumpkins as though spilling from the mouth, or putting half of a Barbie doll in the mouth with some fake blood. A couple of jack-o-lanterns carved with frightening-yet-joyous expressions surrounded by smashed smaller pumpkins and a large hammer is certain to bring out the dark-humor laughs.

3. Pop Culture

A pop-culture reference on something as traditional as a Halloween pumpkin seldom fails to bring surprised laughter. Any flash-in-the-pan celebrity or fad is fair game. Think about viral videos, sports star scandals or reality show contestants. A Snooki-from-"Jersey- Shore" pumpkin, for example, would feature a black wig with a poof and large eyes with fake lashes. Use additional pumpkins and a Lycra dress, then accessorize with giant hoop earrings and a beer bottle to take it to the next level.

Pumpkin Carving Ideas

pumpkin carving ideas| pumpkin carving ideas for kids| pumpkin carving ideas pinterest| pumpkin carving ideas for couples| pumpkin carving ideas easy| pumpkin carving ideas tumblr| pumpkin carving ideas for toddlers| pumpkin carving ideas for girls

You don't have to resort to the standard and predictable pumpkin carving ideas this Halloween. Instead of going with the traditional jack-o'-lantern face, get creative with your designs. Play with the pumpkin's natural form to see what inspiration comes to you. For instance, if possible, incorporate deformities such as lumps and bumps into your carving plan for a bit of added character.

1. Halloween Messages

Rather than cutting a drawing or a face on your pumpkin, try carving out a special Halloween message instead. Depending on the length of the word or phrase, as well as the size of your pumpkin, you can limit the design to one pumpkin, or you can use individual pumpkins for each word or letter to spell out the message you want to use. For a simple idea, carve "Boo!" into the face of your pumpkin, or try clever Halloween-related words or phrases like "You look boo-tiful!" or "Witch way to the candy?"

2. Sick Pumpkin

For a gross-out carving idea, try making a puking pumpkin. To make this design, set aside the pulp and seeds when you clean out the inside of the pumpkin. Carve a jack-o'-lantern face into the pumpkin, making the mouth extra wide and the eyes slitted so they appear to be squinting. Take the pulp and seeds and place them inside and around the base of the pumpkin's mouth to look like puke. If you think this is too messy for a front porch pumpkin, use the same method to make a creepy snack, only replace the pulp and seeds with dip or hummus for fresh veggies.

3. Pumpkin Pi

For the math nerds out there, make your carving a play on both pumpkin pie, a traditional fall treat, and pi, the mathematical constant. Trace the symbol for pi onto the face of your pumpkin to use as the guide for your carving. You could also trace the numerical representation of pi, 3.14, onto the face of your pumpkin for your carving design. This is probably not a design reference that everyone will understand, but for those that do, it should be a refreshing, playful design that breaks away from the norm.

4. Pumpkin Creatures

Rather than carving your pumpkin the traditional way with the stem end pointing upwards and the bottom end being the base, shake things up by using the stem as the nose of your pumpkin's face. Stems can be all different shapes and sizes, so use your pumpkin's particular look as inspiration for your design. For instance, a long stem could be used to make an elephant design, or a short, stubby stem could be used to make a pig. To ensure the pumpkin stays put after carving, cut the bottom side so that it becomes flat and can act as the base. Also, if you plan to put a candle inside, cut a hole in the top side for easy access.
