Pumpkin carving is a traditional Halloween activity in which fall harvest meets creepy holiday. Creating a jack-o'-lantern that is truly scary takes a little thought since the traditional triangle eyes and smiling mouth aren't going to achieve the desired effect. Fortunately, making a smile look scary isn't difficult, and a simple face can turn dark with a tilt of the carving knife. When in doubt, sharply pointed eyebrows go a long way towards making a friendly face look maniacal.

1. Zombie Pumpkin

The zombie pumpkin has risen from the dead to frighten trick or treaters. Give your zombie pumpkin X's for eyes, a long jagged scar and an uneven mouth hungry for brains. Use a wood carving tool to cut some long strips from inside the pumpkin, and hang them by pushing the ends into small holes cut in the face. These are the worms eating the zombie pumpkin head.

2. The Fierce Mouth

No matter how skilled you are at pumpkin carving, you can always create a scary pumpkin with the right wide toothy mouth. This basic idea works well for kids since it doesn't have to require any precision cutting. Start by drawing the design on the pumpkin with a pencil, and cut along the lines. Try carving jagged, pointed teeth into a maniacal grin. Lopsided mouths also work well as do large frowns. Just stay away from the square teeth since those tend to turn out more goofy than scary.

3. Cannibal Pumpkin

The cannibal requires two pumpkins, one large and one small. Design the eyes however you please, but leave plenty of space for the mouth. The mouth needs to be large enough to fit the smaller pumpkin in its jaws. If the smaller pumpkin is large enough to carve, carve in a horrified face with a big "O" for a mouth. If it isn't large enough, draw on a face with permanent marker or paint one on with oil or acrylic paints. Secure the smaller pumpkin in the mouth of the larger one, and light the large one from the inside. You can light the small one too if it has room for a candle, or carve a hole in the back of it so the single light source can shine through both pumpkin faces.

4. Templates

If you do not feel comfortable designing your scary pumpkin face yourself, browse online for some printable carving templates or look at your local Halloween store. Invest in some high quality carving tools since many templates are intricate and require precision carving.
