Halloween is all about fun and creativity, and one of the best ways to incorporate both into the holiday is through the carving of the jack-o- lantern. Carved gourds have increased in intricacy as people have discovered the possibilities for recreating portraits, movie characters, still life scenes and pop culture references. Creating a laugh-out-loud pumpkin does not have to be difficult, however. It is most often accomplished with a good idea, fairly simple carving and clever accessories.

1. Nerds, Socialites and More

The stereotypical characters of high school and beyond make for clever pumpkins, especially when you bring in accessories or stage a scene for display. To create a "nerd" pumpkin, carve a wide smile and use wire to add braces, then either carve or glue on large eyeglass frames. Add a propeller beanie for an old-school nerd look. A socialite pumpkin can be created with a blond wig, a toy mobile phone attached to the ear area, painted makeup and a setting that features anything from a stuffed "purse dog" to a pair of sparkly shoes placed beneath the pumpkin. Put a large socialite pumpkin in the driver's seat of a child's pink motorized jeep for extra laughs. A hipster pumpkin might feature horn-rimmed glasses, a flannel shirt and ear buds.
